It's 1850 in Appalachia, and 10-year-old Cadi Forbes is mourning the recent loss of her grandmother. Things haven't been easy in the Forbes family, what with that recent death as well as the earlier passing of Cadi's younger sister, an accident that's left Cadi's mother, Fia, cold and remote, while her father Angor, tries to keep the family together. But first they must bury his mother, an act that involves evoking a mysterious and feared figure known as the Sin Eater who takes the recently departed's sins and absorbs them into himself so that they can pass on with a clean slate.
No one is supposed to look into the eyes of the Sin Eater, but Cadi does, mainly because she figures he might be able to absolve her of her sins while she's still alive and thus maybe also lessen or even abolish her heavy guilt stemming from her sister's death. Neighbor boy Fagan Kai doesn't think that's a good idea, what with what he's been taught by his abusive father Brogan and subservient mother Iona Kai. Brogan is the self-appointed leader of the cove and he rules it with an iron fist, such as dealing with a Stranger who's arrived, preaching the gospel of Jesus.
